Statement On Suspension Of Fuel Surcharge Increase (09/09/2004)

British Airways World Cargo has announced that it has suspended an increase in its fuel surcharge. The airline's fuel index rose to a level that would have triggered a rise to GBP 0.20/kg or local currency equivalent.

Keith Packer, Senior Vice President Commercial, said:

"This decision was in recognition of the unprecedented volatility of fuel prices recently. We felt that it was important to recognise the situation faced by our customers and so we are prepared to absorb the extra costs involved. Therefore, it was prudent to suspend the fuel surcharge increase on this occasion.

"The fuel index remains the most effective way of maintaining transparency with our customers over the calculation of fuel surcharges and we will continue to use this methodology. Any changes in the fuel surcharge in line with our index will be communicated to our customers with two weeks notice, as honesty and openness remain a priority".
